Re: 1967 S800 restoration project with a difference
well iv'e now got a speedo and a rev counter coming that should hopefully replace the internals of the spare speedo and rev counter. it wont be easy but it'll be worth it.
and i'm also making a clock from an old jet aircraft Machmeter (dated 1955) , and i'm making a panel to replace the broken plastic panel which did hold the ashtray. not an easy part to make due to the shape but it's getting there.
i know it's a little pointless at this stage but hopefully once the chassis and body has been sorted it'll just be a matter of assembly of all the collected bits

Re: 1967 S800 restoration project with a difference
well this is the rev counter i need to graft into the S800 one
as you can see the numbers are so very close it'll be good enough. and the shift light is bolted to the screen but thats easy as it can have the wires lenghened and go somewhere out of the way
wish me luck

Re: 1967 S800 restoration project with a difference
Hi my pal used to make those machmeters and I fitted them into Vulcan and Victor flight control systems. I thought initialy you were being a bit hopeful on the speed with the new engine - Mach 1 ?

Re: 1967 S800 restoration project with a difference
the Machmeter cost me £5 and there are quite a few on ebay.
a quick read up on them, after i stripped it down seeing how it worked, the reason for a Mach number rather than air speed is that Mach 1 is slighly different at different altitudes and air density. so what may be a safe air speed at one height isn't a safe speed at another so going by the Mach number is safer.
aircraft time clocks are going for silly money on ebay and most are quite radioactive anyway. i tested the Machmeter, there is no Radium on the dials.

part way there with the clock
using the internals of a modern Ford clock and managed to use the hour hand from the clock and the Minute hand is the Machmeter hand. wired to battery and it works
modify the casing tomorrow and screw it all together.

Re: 1967 S800 restoration project with a difference
bet you didn't think it'll look this good
waiting for the glue to fully harden before i trim it for the clock. and i found the original one that was in the car. i know the radio blank is a sought after part and the whole panel including blank may be for sale soon. sadly the red switch has been made to fit so it isn't perfect.

Re: 1967 S800 restoration project with a difference
well this is the electronic analogue speedo i'm grafting into the S800 speedo
the position of the speed numbers exactly match the S800 speed numbers so that part is perfect. the odometer is in a slightly different position and no trip meter. doesn't matter though, it's close enough to fool at first glance
few holes and it bolted in very easily
the original trip reset knob is now just a dummy stuck into position. i wont be able to use the original S800 pointers as they are very heavy designed to be used as a self damping pointer. i'll need to make something to look similar but be a lot lighter for the new electronics. rev counter still needs to be finished and is a little more complicated to fit into the original rev counter casing.
but i have been busy with other things
i am nearing completion on a second Machmeter clock
one for the flat

Re: 1967 S800 restoration project with a difference
not a lot has happened with the car. i'm trying to sort a little workshop with electric power so hopefully then i can battle on with it. just getting more bits plated at the moment.
iv'e been trying to find a 24 hour RAF aircraft clock as the Mach clock is just a bit of short term/comedy clock. managed to get hold of a nice little clock.
it's a WW2 German Luftwaffe aircraft clock possibly from an ME109. this MK5 version dates 1943 to 1945. it has a fifteen minute chronometer and it keeps perfect time.
the Mach clock can be swapped in any time
