Water Pump
Hi All
How free should the water pump turn on a mk1 s800?
I had it off to do some other work and before putting it back on I turned the key that connects to the cam shaft
To me it feels stiff.. stiff enough to require a pliers to turn it rather that been able to freely turn it with fingers
Is this normal?
Thanks

Re: Water Pump
Hi
I don't think so, it should run by hand but not too much loose. I've rebuild mine recently and I did apply a little too much pressure to the bearing, and yes you need pliers to turn it, that was my alert
Afterwards I released a little pressure and fine!

Re: Water Pump
It is not easy to determine how stiff it is to turn from the small dog, with the cover off and turning the impeller you get a better idea of the friction within the seals and the bearing.
The bearing roughness gives a better indication of condition, because if the water seal is damaged the bearing will have had water in it.

Re: Water Pump
Thanks Guys- Having taken the cover off, the impeller doesn't seem too hard to turn and is not very rough so I think I might be overcomplicating things striping and rebuild unnecessarily
