posticon Crank Cap- Opinion Wanted

Hi All

My engine crank cap has seen better days, it looks like someone used force to remove it in the past and the belt wasn't sitting right in the grove

With my engine out anyway, I decided to get a new one which is a reproduction as I understand the original Is no longer available

I was about to put the new one on and I noticed that the reproduction was significantly heavier, in-fact twice the weight, 1022g versus 448g from the one I took off

I know this is a high revving performance machine, people normally going to great lengths to fit light weight pulleys rather than visa versa, my gut feeling is I shouldn't be adding more weight

Am I being too pedantic?

Thanks

Are you talking about a Honda S800 - or a Honda Beat (given your name tag?)

If its Beat info you need then sadly I don't think you will find it here.

Referring to the s800, I own both an s800 and a beat but unfortunately most of the s800 usernames were gone on this forum already 😀

OK - just seen your picture of the cars which explains it all!

Are you aware there are Mk 1 and Mk 2 engines which have different pulleys? Having said that I haven't come across any reproductions - was this from Ortmanns?

Yes I am aware, eventually managed to get out the rollers from the original and was about to refit the reproduction from them (very efficient service I might add) I guess I Just wasn’t expecting the drastic difference in weight

I wasn't aware they had remade this item. Its unusual for their parts to be so different to the original.
Maybe they have had to resort to a different form of manufacture - cast versus pressed steel for instance.
Originals to appear on eBay from time to time and Stewart Hutchinson may have some spares to sell - he has posted on here recently.

Thanks Steve- I have managed to straighten out some of the knocks on my original one I am going to reuse it, the difference was down to materials alright the original looks to be part aluminium and part steel whereas the replacement was just very solid steel
