Water Pumps

Hi,

My water pump I bought off the late Peter Rose a few years ago has started leaking.

I know Peter had adapted them to use a different seal. He told me they used a seal from a washing machine which only cost £5 which meant that if it ever leaked it would be a cheap fix - problem is - does anyone know which washing machine the seals came from?!

Any information much appreciated - thanks.

If your on about the rear flat seal (carbon or ceramic I think) I had a good chat with Peters son and he has no idea what his dad used.

Re: Water Pumps

I recently rebuilt my engine after over 25 years unused. The water pump that I installed had been used but look as good as new but also has been stored for 25 years. The water and glycol coolant dripped out from the hole under the water pump but overnight it stopped as though the rubber seal had dried out and needed the glycol to restore its effectiveness. I have not installed exhaust yet so have only run motor for a few seconds so far. Time will tell.

I have the details of the seal that Peter Rose used on later pump rebuilds.

Hi Peter - can you post it here so that anyone with an adapted refurbished pump from Peter Rose can keep a note for when their seal might go? Cheers.

Re: Water Pumps

Hi the seal is 10X32X12TC4 available from Budgetbearings.co.uk for around £4.
It is defined as a fork and damper seal. This is the seal Peter used on the last rebuilt pumps. emoticon

I have pulled the pump apart. The shaft of the bearing is rusted which means I cannot just change the seal (the rust will cut into the new seal).

If you overhaul your modified pump keep an eye out for this issue. I am now replacing the bearing as well so that the new seal has a smooth surface to sit against.
