my S800 restoration

i'm starting a new thread for the restoration of the body work and i shall leave the engine work in the other thread.

even though i am building a bit of a hot rod the body will remain as standard as i can keep it. there will be a full interior with bucket seats and a rear half cage . i don't want to detract from the age of the car so most of the interior will be cleaned as best as possible but still have a slight tattyness to it

the body will get a full respray but not down to bare metal as i have a small budget. the plan is to keep it red even though it has been three different colours over the years. light blue metalic (don't know correct name) then bright metalic green then red.

Image

this car has come with some history. it shows 53,000 miles on the speedo. i have mot's dating back to 1989 showing the milage at 42,000 miles. there is a 10 year gap where the car spent time in storage between 1993 to 2004. the gap in mot's shows it did 63 miles in that time

there is also a valuation from 1990

Image

does anyone remember this car prior to 1990? the valuation says it used to be a successful hill climb vehicle,it would be great to find some race history for this car. the reg number used to be LTV 640 F. it was re registered january 1989

anyway , looking over the car it appears very solid but with areas of surface rust emoticon

this hadn't been opened for many years judging by the amount of rust that fell out

i've started to clean and polish the rear lights (autosol chrome/aluminim polish works a treat on plastic lenses)and polish the boot struts . the boot struts have small rust spots on them and the rear chrome is very thin in places but to me this is great as it gives it age. as i said before i don't want this car to be too clean, i want it to show its age emoticon

more pictures to follow as i get more of the car apart

I had no idea the car had been green at some time. emoticon
I tried in vain to find any previous history of the car I know the fella that purchased it before Simon had it but he cant remember where it came from or a name unfortunatly. I spent some time researching the old reg No. but again nothing.. emoticon

Re: my S800 restoration

Before Stewart owned the car it was owned by Simon Cresswell. There was a period when he hardly used it due to the family coming along.
Apparently it had been used in competition in the past and originally had a works lightweight crank and 2 ring pistons.
Simon always said it went well but didn't like to idle. This was clearly due to the racing engine parts within.
These items were only discovered during the 1980's when the engine was stripped for a rebuild. I believe the lghtweight crank was used as payment for the rebuild by another club member!
There is reference made in some publications to a hillclimb car of metallic green colour and I am wondering if this is what the car was used for in the late 1970's?
Hope this helps.

Hi Barry,

Will have a look - could take a while finding the article in a 1970's magazine in the loft!
