s800 water pump


hi has anyone fitted an Ortmann overhaul kit
it looks difficult, any advice

If you have any mechanical skills it should be fairly easy if care is taken, if not find a friend that has.

HI hondapete2 thanks for your quick reply
the problem I have is how to get the copper wire out that is holding the old bearing in place, I have the equipment to push the bearing out of the housing ,and I think you have to heat the impeller to shrink onto the shaft, I have tried to pull the copper wire out but will not move I have not broken it off yet

Keep trying to get the wire out, soak it with penetrating fluid, it may help.
I have in the past just pressed out the bearing and it has sheared the wire and not damaged the housing, it may end up the only way.
The impeller is easily broken and also can be loose on the new bearing so may need to be loctited in place on assembly.

Hi Pete thanks for your advice, have you tried heating the housing to help release the wire by the way I have been a club member since early 90, I saw an article that Peter Rose did an exchange unit but of coarse we have lost that expertise now, by the way a new impeller comes with kit but has to be heated to fit on the shaft.

When you fit the impeller make sure you press against the other end of the shaft not the housing.

Hi,

I have recently rebuilt a water pump. Regarding the bearing wire, I had the same issue. No way to pull it out even after using WD40.
I managed to remove the wire by doing the following:
- I cut one end of the wire
- I used a punch to push slightly the wire at the end that was cut
- Then I pulled the wire at the other end with pliers. Surprisingly, it came off easily.

My wire was made of copper, not corroded, and when I pressed out the bearing, the housing of the water pump was rather clean.
I fit a stainless steel wire on the new bearing.

For severe cases, Norman Hart gave the following advises:
- If both ends of a copper retaining wire are still sticking out and if you are afraid the wire isn't going to come out easily, drill into the opposite side of the housing and cut through the exposed wire. That way, you only have to pull half way and you are less likely to break off the wire end you are trying to grasp. Penetrating oil might help.
- If worse comes to worst and the wire has broken off flush so there is nothing to grasp and pull, a last ditch measure is to dissolve the wire with concentrated nitric acid.

The new bearing has to be pressed into the housing with a bearing press - so do we think the wire is essential?

Is it really going to move if we leave the wire out?

I think poking a wire back in is easy, but as you say it is unlikely to move as it has no end thrust and is tight in the housing, a drop of Loctite would be a better solution.
Regarding the wire I have pressed out the bearings with the wire still in and it has just sheared the wire, I don't think soaking the body in Nitric is a good idea.

I believe that the bearing wire is necessary because vibrations may allow the bearing to move and the impeller is very close to the water pump housing.

I would press out the bearing with the wire in place at last resort. But as HONDAPETE2 would have done this several times, you may want to try this solution right now.

As far as I know, early S600 water pump had a different housing than the one used on the S800. The position of the bearing was still secured with a wire, but my understanding is that this wire had a U shape (principle similar to the clip used on MK2 brake hoses) and could not secure the bearing all around its perimeter. So I think that such solution was not enough strong and that’s probably why the water pump housing has been changed later on.

Now, fitting a stainless steel wire (as I did) may not be a good idea if the bearing must be pressed out with the wire in place. The housing would be severely damaged. I may in the end replace this wire with a copper one. FYI 1.4 mm copper wire (electrical wire) is easy to fit on the water pump I rebuilt. I also tried 1.8mm copper wire, but did not manage to push it all around the perimeter.

Complementary info regarding the way to dissolve the wire without attacking the aluminum: the housing does not need to be soaked in concentrated nitric acid. You would need to put a couple of drops at a time over many hours. It is obviously a tedious operation.

M.Ortmann may also have good tips to provide.
